It offers the opportunity to advance into Bus Mechanic Apprentice position/program for upcoming class based on your performance as a Porter as well as your abilities, mechanical aptitude, etc.

As a Porter, get your required CDL through our paid training program (Paid for by the organization) (CDL Class B Driver's License with Passenger Endorsement and Air Brake Endorsement)
Porter Pay: $23.50/hour
As a Bus Mechanic Apprentice, get Mechanic Schooling through Penn College of Technology and required Mechanic Certifications (All Paid for by the organization!) Come grow with us!
Bus Mechanic Apprentice Pay: $26.00/hour with $475. tool allowance annually (Advancement opportunity into Apprentice position/program is based on performance and mechanical abilities demonstrated as a Porter.)

- As a Porter and after completion of Apprentice Program, work 3rd or 2nd shift, both involving weekend work (NOT a choice, but whatever shift is assigned per the union seniority bid system)?
2 year Apprentice program involves:
-Online learning sessions done on site at rabbittransit with Pennsylvania College of Technology faculty and weekly tests;
-Hands on lab learning at Penn College of Technology - Multiple trips of week long, overnight stays at the technical college near Williamsport, PA (lodging provided) for hands on learning. (Must have valid Driver's License to drive our vehicle to training); and
-On the job training onsite at rabbittransit location at 415 N. Zarfoss Dr. York PA with mentors.
Shift:
-As a Porter and after completion of Apprentice Program, work 3rd or 2nd shift, both involving weekend work (NOT a choice, but whatever shift is assigned per the union seniority bid system)
-1st shift during the 2 year Apprentice Program, but after completion of Apprentice Program MUST BE ABLE TO WORK NIGHT SHIFT involving weekends.
-After completion of 2 year Apprentice Program, MUST BE ABLE TO WORK 3rd shift (most likely) or 2nd shift, both involving weekend work (NOT a choice but whichever is assigned based union seniority bid system).
MUST be able to work whatever shift is assigned within the department operating hours per union seniority bid system, otherwise you will be required to pay back cost of Apprentice schooling (thousands of dollars) per your signed agreement. York Maint. Dept operates Sunday 6 AM – Saturday 12:30 AM and Saturday 6 AM – Saturday 11:59 PM. So MUST have open availability to work a shift during ANY of these days and times.
Apprentice program requires a commitment to work for rabbittransit for five (5) years, after completion of Apprentice Program, on whatever shift is assigned per union seniority bid system, otherwise you will be required to pay back the cost of schooling (thousands of dollars) per your signed Apprentice agreement.
As an Apprentice, must be willing and able to earn industry recognized credentials such as:
-EPA 609 Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning Certificate
-Class 7 PA State Motor Vehicle Inspection and more
High School diploma or equivalent required. (Will be verified.)
Preferred Candidate will have:
•Prefer one year of verifiable, full-time experience as a maintenance technician diagnosing malfunctions, and repairing medium and heavy-duty vehicles. Up to one year of the required experience may be substituted by successful completion of vocational education.
•Prefer knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair principles, procedures, methods and techniques.
•Prefer knowledge of equipment and specialized tools.
•Prefer knowledge of medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicle preventive maintenance.
•Prefer knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
•Prefer ability to diagnose and repair medium-duty and heavy-duty vehicles; demonstrated problem solving skills and complete assignments.
Must have:
•Ability to work variable shifts, irregular hours and be available for work/overtime in accordance with bid, CBA, policy, and response to emergency situations.
•Ability to follow and communicate both verbally and written in English. Ability to read and interpret service and instruction manuals.
•Ability to use and operate proficiently computerized maintenance data systems.
•Ability to complete record-keeping and written reports.
•Knowledge of basic computer skills.
•Must meet hiring qualifications including but not limited to, minimum of 18 years of age with additional criteria, acceptable driving record and background verification in accordance with CPTA standards.
•Must have regular attendance and punctuality.
Certificates and Licenses:
•Must possess valid Commercial Driver's License class "B" operator's license with passenger endorsement and air brake restriction lifted that is not under suspension or revocation. (Must obtain within first year of employment if does not have.)
•Must possess a valid DOT medical card. (Will send for this)
•This is a safety sensitive position subject to US DOT Drug and Alcohol pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion and return to duty testing.
Apprentice Job Summary (Role in organization):
This position is responsible for performing general servicing, preventative maintenance, basic diagnosing and troubleshooting, and performing both minor and major repairs to maintain all fleet vehicles in good working order. Position also requires working along with other mechanics in major repairs and overhauls. Also performs state safety inspections as required by Penn DOT and ensures CPTA is in compliance with state and federal regulations. Receives complaints and requests for equipment service and makes evaluations; makes road calls to service-disabled vehicles, as directed by management. The mechanic is responsible for maintaining a safe and organized work environment. Completes all necessary record-keeping and report preparation. The mechanic is responsible for meeting all attendance requirements according to bid, CBA, policy, and safety emergency response situations. CPTA is the County Emergency responder. Performs other duties as assigned. The Apprentice position is designed to develop technical skills in vehicle maintenance. The Apprentice will receive hands-on training in diagnosing, repairing and maintaining transit vehicles.
