Hearing Distressing Voices Simulation
The Hearing Distressing Voices Simulation is a 2.5-hour workshop developed by Pat Deegan, PhD. It was designed to help individuals better understand what it is like to experience distressing voices. The workshop begins with watching a filmed lecture by Dr. Pat Deegan about the voice hearing experience. Followed by the simulation, during which participants will wear audio equipment, with a specially designed recording that simulates the experience of hearing distressing voices, while engaging in a variety of tasks, designed to mimic real life experiences of individuals who hear voices. Upon completion the group will come back together for discussion. As a result of the simulation experience, participants will increase their understanding of the lived experience, increase empathy for those who struggle with it, and gain insight into the impact their involvement/intervention can have on a person who hears distressing voices.
Here’s what people are saying about the simulation:
“Thank you Pat for allowing me to get a better understanding of what a person goes through. I don’t have sympathy, I have empathy.”
…
“If you can put yourself in another’s shoes even for a short time, it really changes how you respond to and care for others.”
…
“This experience was transformative. It really challenged my preconceived notions and helped me better understand the experience of people who hear distressing voices everyday.”
